Change the pitch of any audio file online: open an MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG or FLAC file, or the sound of a video, and move it up or down by up to 12 semitones without changing its speed. Compare before and after, then download MP3 or WAV at the original sample rate. Nothing is uploaded.

How to change the pitch of an audio file
- Choose the file. Tap Choose an audio file or drop it on the tool. The line under it shows the format, sample rate, channels, length and size.
- Set the pitch. Tap a preset (octave down, −2, −1, +1, +2, octave up) or press −1 and +1 for any value from −12 to +12 semitones.
- Listen before and after. Press Play and switch between Before and After at the same position.
- Download. Press Download. The file name carries the shift, for example
interview_-2st.mp3.
More options holds three extras: fine tuning in cents, a loop for one part, and the file format (MP3 at 128 to 320 kbps, or WAV). By default the download matches your file: MP3 for compressed files, WAV for WAV and FLAC.
What pitch shifting does to audio
A pitch shift multiplies every frequency in the recording by the same number. One semitone is a factor of 21/12 ≈ 1.0595, so +1 semitone raises a 440 Hz tone to 466.16 Hz. Twelve semitones make an octave and double the frequency, and 100 cents make one semitone (semitones explained).
Why the speed stays the same: playing a recording faster raises its pitch and shortens it, like a record at the wrong speed. This tool stretches the sound in time with a phase vocoder and then resamples it, so the pitch moves while the length stays identical to the sample. The difference between the two is covered in pitch vs tempo.
| Shift | Interval | Frequency ratio | A4 440 Hz becomes | Speed change if pitch and speed moved together |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| −12 | octave | ×0.5000 | 220.00 Hz | -50.0 % |
| −5 | perfect fourth | ×0.7492 | 329.63 Hz | -25.1 % |
| −2 | whole step | ×0.8909 | 392.00 Hz | -10.9 % |
| −1 | half step | ×0.9439 | 415.30 Hz | -5.6 % |
| +1 | half step | ×1.0595 | 466.16 Hz | +5.9 % |
| +2 | whole step | ×1.1225 | 493.88 Hz | +12.2 % |
| +5 | perfect fourth | ×1.3348 | 587.33 Hz | +33.5 % |
| +12 | octave | ×2.0000 | 880.00 Hz | +100.0 % |
Audio formats and quality
Lossless formats (WAV, FLAC) store every sample. Lossy formats (MP3, AAC/M4A, OGG) remove sounds you are unlikely to hear to make the file smaller. The tool decodes any of them to full-resolution audio, shifts the pitch, and encodes once. That is why a WAV or FLAC source should become WAV, and an MP3 should be saved at its own bit rate or higher: the tool suggests both.
Sample rate: the number of samples per second, usually 44.1 kHz for music and 48 kHz for video. The download keeps the rate of your file. The one exception is MP3 above 48 kHz: MP3 cannot store 96 kHz, so such a file is saved at 48 kHz, and WAV keeps 96 kHz.
| Output | Size per minute | 4-minute song | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAV 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo | 10.1 MB | 40 MB | Lossless. Best for editing again or for a DAW. |
| WAV 16-bit, 48 kHz stereo | 11.0 MB | 44 MB | Lossless, video sample rate. |
| MP3 320 kbps | 2.3 MB | 9.4 MB | Highest MP3 quality. |
| MP3 256 kbps | 1.9 MB | 7.5 MB | High quality. |
| MP3 192 kbps | 1.4 MB | 5.6 MB | Good for music; the usual choice. |
| MP3 128 kbps | 0.9 MB | 3.8 MB | Small; fine for speech and podcasts. |
Who uses an audio pitch changer?
Singers and musicians make practice tracks in a comfortable range: 1 to 3 semitones down helps when a song is too high for your voice, and the pitch shifter guide for singers explains how far to go. Karaoke singers shift backing tracks; see the karaoke pitch changer.
Podcasters and video creators lower or raise a voice by 1 or 2 semitones to match two recordings, or retune a sample by a few cents. Sound designers move effects, drums and ambience an octave down for a heavier sound. If you work in an editor, changing pitch in Audacity gives the same result with more steps, and changing pitch on a phone covers iPhone and Android.
Sound quality and limits
- Accuracy: in our tests every downloaded file landed within 0.1 cents of the exact target, and the length was identical to the sample.
- Big shifts: up to about ±3 semitones sounds natural. Beyond ±5, voices sound thinner (up) or darker (down), because their resonances (formants) move with the notes.
- Loudness: the level is lowered only if the shifted sound would clip: WAV stays below −0.1 dBFS and MP3 below −1 dBFS.
- Speed: for a 3-minute song the shifted sound starts playing in about 0.7 seconds, and the whole file is ready in about 5 seconds on a desktop computer. Phones take longer.
- Files: up to 10 minutes and 200 MB. A video gives an audio file, not a new video.

Questions about changing the pitch of audio
How do I change the pitch of audio without changing the speed?
Open the file in the tool above, set the semitones and download it. The pitch moves with a phase vocoder while the length stays the same, so a 3:20 track still lasts 3:20 and its tempo does not change.
Can I change the pitch of an OGG, FLAC or M4A file?
Yes. The tool opens MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG and FLAC files and the sound of MP4, MOV and WebM videos. An OGG or M4A file is saved as MP3 by default; choose WAV under More options for lossless output.
Does changing the pitch reduce the audio quality?
Small shifts sound natural; large shifts change the tone. Up to ±3 semitones is hard to notice. Choose WAV or a high MP3 bit rate so the file is not compressed more than the original was.
How many semitones do I need to change the key?
Count the half steps between the two keys: C to D is +2, G to E is −3. The guide on how many semitones to change key has the full chart.
Is it free, and is my audio uploaded?
It is free, with no sign-up, and your audio is never uploaded. Your browser does all the work on your device, so the file never leaves it and there is no watermark or daily limit.
What is the difference between pitch and key?
Pitch is how high a sound is; the key is the set of notes a song uses. Shifting every note by the same semitones changes both. Read key change vs pitch change for when each word fits.
Tested: what we measured
- 24 downloaded files re-measured: pitch within 0.1 cents of the target (440 Hz −12 semitones → 220.00 Hz, +3 → 523.25 Hz), length identical to the sample.
- Sample rate kept: 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz WAV files came back at 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz; mono stayed mono.
- MP3 at 128 and 320 kbps decoded again and measured; the preview you hear equals the downloaded file sample for sample.
- Formats opened: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A and the sound of MP4 and WebM videos.
