Best Pitch Correction Software (Free and Paid, 2026)

By Mayer · Last updated 2026-09-28

The best pitch correction software depends on the job. Melodyne is the reference for natural, note-by-note editing and the only one here that edits notes inside chords. AutoTune leads for real-time and the robotic effect. MAutoPitch, GSnap and MuseFX PitchFix are free. To change a whole song’s key, use a pitch changer instead.

How this page was made: every product fact below was checked on the vendor’s own website on 2026-09-28. We did not test these plugins and we earn nothing from them: no affiliate links, no rankings from paid placements. Prices change often, so we write “check the vendor” instead of guessing. Our editorial guidelines explain the rules.

Pitch correction vs pitch shifting: which one do you need?

Pitch correction analyses each note of a single voice or instrument and pulls the notes that are off (flat or sharp) toward the right pitch. Notes that are already in tune are left alone. Pitch shifting moves every note of the recording by the same number of semitones, so a song in G becomes a song in E. It does not fix a single wrong note. New to the terms? Start with what pitch is in music.

AutoTune (Antares): the standard for real-time and the effect

Antares now writes the brand as “AutoTune”. The current flagship, AutoTune Pro 11, has an Auto Mode for real-time correction and a Graph Mode for detailed manual pitch and time editing, plus formant and vibrato controls and a 4-part harmony player. Antares also sells AutoTune Advanced and a lighter, CPU-friendly AutoTune, and a key finder, AutoKey 2, that sends key and scale to AutoTune. Pro 11 is sold as a one-time perpetual licence or through the AutoTune Unlimited subscription.

The key setting is retune speed: slow values sound natural, the fastest value gives the hard, stepped effect known from pop and hip-hop. Choose it if you need correction while tracking or on stage, or you want the effect itself.

Melodyne (Celemony): natural correction and polyphonic editing

Melodyne shows every note of a recording as a “blob” that you can move, straighten or reshape: pitch, timing, vibrato, formants and more. It runs through ARA inside supported DAWs, as a plugin, or standalone. There are four editions: essential (basic pitch and timing for vocals), assistant (the full vocal toolkit), editor (adds DNA for polyphonic audio) and studio (everything).

Polyphonic pitch correction

DNA (Direct Note Access), in Melodyne editor and studio, lets you correct a single note inside a chord on piano or guitar. For chords, this is the tool to check first. Melodyne is an editor, not a live effect: you record first, then correct. Celemony offers a 30-day trial of Melodyne 5 studio.

Waves Tune Real-Time: live correction in a plugin

Waves describes it as “instant vocal pitch correction, in the studio or live”. It is built for a singer who wants to stay in tune while performing or recording, with little set-up. Waves sells it on its own and within its Essential and Ultimate subscription plans; prices and sales change often, so check Waves directly. Choose it if you want automatic live correction and already use Waves plugins.

Logic Pro Flex Pitch: built in for Mac users

Logic Pro includes two tools. Flex Pitch shows detected notes like a piano roll in the Audio Track Editor; hotspots on each note edit pitch drift, vibrato, fine pitch, gain and formant shift. The Pitch Correction effect works in real time, with a Response control for how fast notes are pulled to the scale. There is nothing extra to buy if you already own Logic Pro. AutoTune vs Logic Flex Pitch: AutoTune adds a dedicated real-time engine and the classic effect sound; Flex Pitch is free inside Logic and fine for everyday vocal tuning. For Apple’s free app, see changing pitch in GarageBand.

Best free pitch correction software

  • MAutoPitch (MeldaProduction): free automatic tuning and pitch correction for vocals and other monophonic instruments, with formant shift and stereo expansion.
  • GSnap (GVST): free autotune effect for VST hosts. Gentle settings nudge off-key notes in; extreme settings give the robotic effect; a MIDI mode fits a recording to a new melody.
  • MuseFX PitchFix: part of the free MuseFX suite for Audacity, MuseScore 4 and any VST3 host, installed through MuseHub. It has modes for male and female voices and snaps to major, minor and rarer scales.
  • Logic Pro users: Flex Pitch and the Pitch Correction effect cost nothing extra.

Audacity pitch correction plugin

Audacity itself has no pitch correction. The Audacity support site suggests MuseFX PitchFix as a realtime effect. Audacity’s own Change Pitch effect moves every note by the same amount, so it changes the key but does not fix wrong notes; the steps are in how to change pitch in Audacity.

Free Melodyne alternatives for Mac

No free tool gives Melodyne-style blob editing. On a Mac, Flex Pitch in Logic Pro comes closest; for automatic correction, MAutoPitch and MuseFX PitchFix are free (check each vendor’s download page for current macOS support). Avoid cracked downloads: they are illegal and a common way to install malware.

How far out of tune is a note? Cents to Hz

Correction software measures errors in cents: 100 cents make one semitone. The table converts cents into Hz at two common sung notes, so you can read a tuner or a pitch graph. Values are calculated with ratio = 2cents/1200.

Cents off → Hz off (calculated)
ErrorA3 (220 Hz)A4 (440 Hz)Note
5 cents+0.64 Hz+1.27 Hz—
10 cents+1.27 Hz+2.55 Hz—
20 cents+2.56 Hz+5.11 Hz—
25 cents+3.20 Hz+6.40 Hza quarter of a semitone
50 cents+6.45 Hz+12.89 Hzhalf a semitone (a quarter tone)
100 cents+13.08 Hz+26.16 Hzone semitone: a wrong note, not a tuning slip

A singer who is off by a few cents on some notes needs correction or practice (see common pitch problems for singers). A singer who is off by many semitones on the high notes needs a lower key; check your range with the vocal range test and read what to do when a song is too high.

When a browser pitch changer is the better choice

For key changes you do not need a plugin or a DAW. The online pitch changer on our home page, the pitch shifter and the karaoke pitch changer shift a whole file in semitones, keep the tempo and run on your device, so nothing is uploaded. In our test exports (11 WAV files), the audio pitch changer’s worst pitch error was 0.041 cents with no change in length; how our pitch shifting works explains the method. To find the key before you shift, use the song key finder.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best pitch correction software?

There is no single winner. Melodyne is the reference for natural, detailed editing and polyphonic audio; AutoTune is the reference for real-time correction and the effect. For a free option, try MAutoPitch, GSnap or MuseFX PitchFix.

Which pitch correction software sounds most natural?

Graphical editing usually sounds most natural, because you fix only the notes that need it and keep vibrato and slides. Melodyne, AutoTune Graph Mode and Logic Flex Pitch all work this way. Automatic modes sound natural at slow retune settings.

What is the industry standard for pitch correction?

Two tools share that role: AutoTune (Antares) for real-time correction and the tuned-vocal sound, and Melodyne (Celemony) for offline, note-by-note editing.

Is there pitch correction for live performance?

Yes. Real-time plugins such as AutoTune in Auto Mode and Waves Tune Real-Time correct while the singer performs. Melodyne does not work live; it edits recordings.

What is the difference between pitch shifting and AutoTune?

AutoTune corrects individual notes toward a scale. Pitch shifting moves the whole recording up or down by the same amount, which is how you change a song’s key.

Can pitch correction change the key of a song?

Not really; it snaps notes to a scale you choose. To move a song to a new key, use a pitch shifter or our transpose music online tool.
